Obituary for Charles Robert Wanker

Charles Robert Wanker, 93, of Bridgeport, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014 in Bridgeport. He was born on July 1, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY a son of the late Charles Edward Wanker and Elsie Rebenklau Wanker.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Therese J. Zahn Wanker who passed away on December 10, 2004.
He is survived by his son, Robert L. Wanker and his wife Rosemary of Bridgeport; three grandchildren, Dr. Charles J. Wanker and his wife Dr. Christine Tholen who reside in the Azores; Mrs. Elizabeth Crist and her husband Kevin of Lititz, PA and Mrs. Mary Conley and her husband Craig of Wheeling, WV; seven great grandchildren, Travis Wanker, Madeleine Wanker, Joshua Wanker, Lee Wanker, Ian Crist, Eli Crist and Andrew Conley; and one sister, Joan Wanker Bernsdorf of Flushing, NY.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Wanker and Lewis Wanker.
Mr. Wanker was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving during WWII. He also obtained his B.S. and M.S. from New York University and was a Naval Architect for over 40 years working for Gibbs and Cox Architect Firm. Mr. Wanker was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church and he loved painting and sailboats and was a member of the Cresthaven Yacht Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints Catholic Church, 317 E. Main Street, Bridgeport WV 26330
Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport on Friday, March21, 2014 from 6-8 pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am at All Saints Catholic Church, 317 E. Main Street, Bridgeport with Father Benedict Kapa as Celebrant. Interment will be in Lutheran All Faith Cemetery in Middle Village, NY.
