Mildred "Millie" Caldwell Singleton, 90, formerly of Hepzibah, WV, and Vero Beach, FL, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2012, at her residence in Vero Beach, FL. She was born in Spelter, WV, on June 21, 1921, a daughter of the late Conrad J. and Icie Yeager Caldwell.

 

On October 30, 1954, she married Wilber "Barney" Singleton, who passed away August 23, 1998.

 

She is survived by three grandsons, Jeffrey R. Clayton and his wife Joy of Hepzibah, WV; Darren T. Clayton and his wife Tina, Sebastian, FL; and Ryan M. Currey and his wife Amanda, Shirley, WV; three great-grandchildren, David I. Clayton and his wife Amanda, Clarksburg; Tabatha Mackintosh and Savannah VanDecker, both of Sebastian, FL; four great-great-grandchildren, Zachery Jones; Isaiah, Gavin, and Gabriel Clayton. A sister, Mary Bailey and her husband Fred, Port St. Lucie, FL; and many nieces and nephews complete her family.

 

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Jean Clayton Currey White; five sisters, Bessie Kennedy, Neva Myers, Minnie Mullins, Thelma Paugh, and Dolores O'Field; and three brothers, Julius, Ernie and Robert Caldwell.

 

Millie was a 1940 graduate of Victory High School. She was a member of the Hepzibah Baptist Church. She owned and operated Milley's Restaurant in Hepzibah. During World War II she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” building B-52 bombers for Good Year Aircraft in Akron Ohio.  She had also worked at Hazel Atlas glass plant as a union representative and in the packing department.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, from 2 – 4 & 6 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Interment will follow in Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.
