Back Send condolences to the Hill Family
Nan Alvin Greathouse Hill, 81, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 27, 2010, at her family farm in Bridgeport. She was born on December 3, 1929, the only child of the late Lonnie Alvin and Edna Huffman Greathouse. She was born and raised in Fairmont, where she graduated from West Fairmont High School and attended Fairmont State College.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Charles Ryan Hill, on April 6, 2010. They were married on February 10, 1949. She was also preceded in death by one son, Jeddy Hill, who passed away on May 23, 2004.
She is survived by one son, Lonnie Hill and his wife Dianna of Saltwell; one daughter Rebecca R. Hill-Quickle and her husband Roger of Chardon, Ohio; one foster daughter Lula Gay Starkey Uttley of Oakdale, NJ; five grandchildren, Stephen Hostutler, Lacey Hill, Lonnie Hill, Jr., Daniel Hill and Zachary Hill; two great-grandchildren, Layne Hostutler and Kolby Hill.
Nan was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Rachel Chapter 47 and reigned as worthy Matron for a year in Bridgeport. Interests included challenging word games, camping, stained glass and bridge. She was known for her back road adventures on her moped wearing her "white lady bug helmet." She was an outspoken advocate for WV land owners. Nan served on the staff of CLANRO (concerned land and natural resources owners). She wrote educated and informative articles concerning gas and oil mineral rights for WV land owners. She was also well-known for her love of animals and she posted no hunting signs on their six generation family owned farm outside of Bridgeport. She was a creative self-taught carpenter, renovating their ten room log farm house, including a fireplace.
She was a born again Christian and member of the Coons Run Baptist Church in Adamsville
A celebration of Nan's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday January 30, 2011 at Coon's Run Baptist Church, RR 2 Box 318 Shinnston, WV 26431, with Reverend Ben Simmons officiating.
