George was a 1944 graduate of Victory high School where he participated in and played varsity football and basketball.  He was named on the All Harrison County football team, where he played end his senior year.  After graduation in June 1944, he enlisted In the United States Navy during World War II where he served aboard several destroyers including the USS Wisconsin as a MM Mate 1st class always in the line of fire, and was honorably discharged in June 1946.  He continued his apprenticeship as a carpenter, which he started in his late teens and worked for several local contractors, namely Riley Construction Company and Henry Haselbacker and Sons.  After his marriage in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean Crisis.  Mr. Nutter spent the next three years guarding the Atlantic Coast, from New York up to the New England States serving aboard the USS Hickory as a MM Mate 1st class.

After much urging from Earl Turner, late co-owner of the Hartland Planing Mill Company, he began his own contracting business in April 1, 1961, known as GEORGE D. NUTTER, CONTRACTOR.  He built many homes in the Harrison County area and was especially noted for his exceptional finish work.

George was recognized in 2004 as being a fifty year member of the Hermon Lodge #6 AF & AM since 1954. He was also a Life member Scottish Rite Free Masonry, Life member Nemesis Shrine AAONAS of Parkersburg, WV, and a 32nd degree member of the Shriners International.  Also to his merit, George was the oldest local member of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters, West Virginia District since 1953 and received his 65 year membership pin this past spring.  Mr. Nutter was a Baptist by faith, and enjoyed and looked forward to each Thursday and Saturday evenings to view the Gaithers Gospel Family musical programs on TV.

An avid gardener, he loved to spend many hours on end in his garden, and to his delight, enjoyed the nourishment he received from the vast of vegetables he grew each year, which he would share with his friends, neighbors, and especially his sons and their families.  Working around the farm and especially the summer months working in the hayfields with his sons and grandsons were very favorite times and memories of his.  No matter how hot or how humid the hayfields would get, he enjoyed every minute of family time it brought.  Mike Barnes a friend and neighbor along with Dave Allen could be seen in the hayfields lending a helping hand with the family.  He especially enjoyed spending Holidays and special events with his sons and grand children including the times he spent in Rick Murray’s Hot Tub, an exceptional good friend of the family.

Observing and celebrating his final birthday September 14, 2010, Mr. Nutter cherished every birthday card he received from all family members including the one he received from a loyal friend John Gallo.
