Helen Rita Whelan Renzelli, 84, of 130 Driftwood Road, Bridgeport, died peacefully at home on Saturday, May 29, 2010. She was born in Grafton on December 1, 1925, a daughter of the late William Matthew and Beatrice Rush Whelan, both originally of Lewis County. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John Philip Renzelli of Anmoore whom she married on August 28, 1948; her son William Eugene Renzelli of Clarksburg; her sister Margaret (Peggy) Whelan Gay of Coatesville, PA and her brother William Francis Whelan of Marysville, CA. 

Rita is survived by her two daughters, Beatrice Anne Renzelli Scott and her husband William (Randy) of Bridgeport and Julia Marie Renzelli Kemmerer of Bridgeport, and two sons, Michael Francis Renzelli of Bridgeport and John Robert Renzelli of Clarksburg.

Also surviving are six grandchildren, Gina Marie Renzelli, Brian Eugene Kemmerer and Melissa Anne Scott, all of Bridgeport, Carmen Michael Renzelli of Philadelphia, PA; Tracy Lynn Kemmerer Dickerson and her husband Robert of Apex, NC; and Stephanie Marie Scott of Morgantown; and two great-grandchildren, Khyler Anne and Khynzli Gwen.

Rita graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Weston, Class of 1941, and graduated from West Virginia Business College in 1943. She worked in the insurance field and then in the automobile industry.

She devoted much of her time to volunteer work. An active member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Rita had served on the parish council, the finance council, the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, and was a lay Eucharistic Minister. She belonged to the Serra Club, held several offices in the Catholic Daughters of America, and was a founding member of the Harrison County Meals on Wheels Program.

Rita will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to People’s Hospice, PO Box 1680, Clarksburg, WV 26302-9960 or to the Bi-County Nutrition Program/Meals on Wheels, 416 Ohio Ave. Nutter Fort, WV 26301.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, on Tuesday from 2:00 to 8:00 pm. The Holy Rosary will be said at 4:00 pm and the Vigil service will be at 7:30 pm Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Reverend Casey Mahone as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
