Back Send condolences to the McCarthy Family

Honorable Daniel L. McCarthy, retired Harrison County Circuit Court Judge, 78, of Bridgeport, passed away on Wednesday morning, November 25, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Parkersburg, WV on December 7, 1930, a son of the late John and Margaret McCarthy.
He is survived by his wife, Janet McCarthy, whom he married on June 29, 1963. Also surviving are two sons, Mike McCarthy and his wife Cheryl; and Chris McCarthy and his wife Meredith, all of Bridgeport. He was the proud and loving grandfather of six grandchildren, Lauren, Emily, Liam, Kyle, Haden, and Addison. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Margaret Cowin, Columbus, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Daniel James McCarthy, and two brothers, Jack and Bernard McCarthy. He was a faithful parishioner of All Saints Catholic Church.
Judge McCarthy was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean War. Following his military service, Judge McCarthy returned to Marietta College where he earned his undergraduate degree. He went on to graduate from the West Virginia College of Law in 1958. Judge McCarthy then settled in Clarksburg, WV where he began to serve the citizens of Harrison County as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney. He was elected to the Harrison County Commission where he served twelve years. In addition, he served as the Clarksburg City Attorney and on the Harrison County Airport Authority. In 1983, he was appointed to serve as circuit court judge in the 15th judicial circuit. He was later elected and re-elected to that position. After retiring from the bench in 1996, he continued to serve as a senior status judge and a civil mediator.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be
made to the Judge Daniel L. McCarthy Scholarship fund which was established in
his honor by the Harrison County Bar Association in 2005, contributions will be
received by the West Virginia University College of Law, Post Office Box 6130,
Morgantown, WV 26506-6130. Alternatively, donations can be made to the
Clarksburg Mission at 312 North Fourth Street, Clarksburg, WV 26301.
Friends will be received at All Saints Catholic Church, Bridgeport, on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. A Vigil Service will be held at the church on Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday morning, November 30, 2009, at 10:00 am with Father Harry Cramer and Father Hilarion V. Cann as Co-Celebrants. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery
