Back Send condolences to the Athey Family
Mr. Thomas C. Athey of Bridgeport died at his home on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 after a courageous fight with cancer with his wife and children at his side. He was born to the late John and Margaret Athey on June 27, 1924.
He is survived by his wife and constant companion of nearly sixty-one years, Erma Whaley Athey, whom he married on July 16, 1948.
Additionally, he is survived by his daughter Linda Pomeroy and her husband Jerry and his son Keith Athey and his wife Sherry all of Bridgeport.
“Athey Tom,” whom he was affectionately called, is also survived by his grandchildren Drew Pomeroy and wife Becky, Suzanne Randolph and husband Jeff, Dirk and Morgan Athey, and great-children Harper Randolph and Tucker and Paxton Pomeroy. No matter how sick he was, their Sunday visits always brought a smile to his face.
He is also survived by one brother, Eugene Athey of Columbus, Ohio, brother –in-law Albert (Pete) Whaley and wife Mary of Florida, and sisters-in- law Betty Kennedy and husband Jerry of Texas, Martha Whaley of Florida, and Jean Whaley of Romney WV as well as wonderful church friends and neighbors who could always be counted on to help whenever needed.
Mr. Athey was preceded in death by brothers Ellsworth and Russell Athey of Cleveland, Ohio, Lester Athey of Tennessee and James Athey of Clarksburg and sisters Alma Stickley of Fairmont, June Cunningham of Columbus, Ohio and Dorothy Harris and Shirley Sandy of Clarksburg.
After graduating from Shinnston High School, Tom proudly served his country during World War II as a radio controller in the United States Army Air Corp. He retired from Cummins Diesel Engine in Fairmont in 1989. He was an active member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church.
The family will receive guests on Monday, June 1, 2009 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Simpson Creek Baptist Church, 231 Philadelphia Avenue, Bridgeport, where funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM, with Dr. C. Michael Hopkins officiating. Inurnment will follow in the West Virginia National Cemetery, Pruntytown.
