Cecil Ray Fortney

Cecil Ray Fortney, 83, of Arlington Addition, went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday evening, October 30, 2008, following a sudden illness.  He was born in Clarksburg on March 3, 1925, a son of the late Albert Ray and Iva Mae Fortney. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Ashcraft Fortney, on May 22, 1989.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and George Pitts, Bridgeport; 3 grandchildren, Carole Renee and Kevin Courtney, North View; Crissy and Jeff Swenskie, West Milford; and David Ray and Stacey Pitts, Knoxville, TN; 3 great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Swenskie, Connor and Cooper Courtney; his brother, Selby “June” Fortney and his wife Fran, Baltimore, MD; and his sister, Ruth Hurst and her husband Paul, Arlington Addition; and his companion and friend, Velma Harris, Nutter Fort

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Hazel Westfall and Helen Daniels; and three brothers, Samuel “Bud” Fortney, Burl Fortney; and Clarence Fortney.

Cecil had worked at Rolland Glass, and retired from Fourco Glass, Jerry Run, in 1987 after 43 years of service.  He was an active member of Faith Christian Fellowship Church and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.  He was an avid bowler, and enjoyed hunting, golfing, camping, working outside, NASCAR, and going to flea markets. 

He loved his church and his family.  He was a quick-witted, giving, and caring man who would help anyone that asked, and was someone whom everyone loved and appreciated. 

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm.  Mr. Fortney will lie in state at Faith Christian Fellowship Church on Monday from 12 noon – 1pm, where services will be held at 1 pm with Pastor Donald Hawkins presiding.  Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.
