Archie E. Sharps

Archie E. Sharps, 91, Bridgeport, passed away Wednesday morning, July 30, 2008, in the Heritage Nursing Home.  He was born in Preston County on October 11, 1916, a son of the late Henry Sank and Nora May Larew Sharps.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Sharps, on April 9, 2001.

Surviving are his daughter, Clarice Gail Findley; and his son, William E. Sharps and his wife Donna; three grandchildren, Mark Findley and his wife Vickie; Judi Lambert and her husband Ronnie; and W. Craig Sharps and his wife Gina; all of Bridgeport; four great-grandchildren, Christina Thompson and her husband Michael, Wallace; Brian Findley, Wallace; Ashley Lambert and Justin Lambert, both of  Bridgeport; two great-great-grandchildren, McKenzie and MaKayla Thompson, Wallace; and two step-great-grandchildren, Alainna and Julia Lantz of Bridgeport.  Four sisters, Genevieve Mouser, Opal Annon, Edith King, all of Newburg; and Naomi Smeltzer and her husband Jack of Warren, Ohio; two brothers, Raymond Sharps of Newburg and Carl Sharps of Southington, OH, and several nieces and nephews complete his family.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Enid Harris and Bertha Rainey; and six brothers, Dennis, James, John, Cecil, Blaine and Dale Sharps;

Archie was retired from Consol’s Robinson Run Mine, and was a member of  the UMWA Local 1501.  He was a member of Middleville Baptist Church for over 50 years, faithfully attending until his nineties, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher.

He was a quite man who believed in hard work, and who set a Christian example in raising his family to believe in God.  Later in life he became a care-giver to his loving wife, and enjoyed being in the outdoors, gardening, and farming.

Friends may call at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Thursday from 2 – 8 pm.  Services will be held at Middleville Baptist Church on Friday, August 1, 2008, at 2 pm with Reverend Paul Boyles and Reverend Alan Rosenberger presiding. Archie will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.   Interment will follow in Woodsdale Memorial Park.
