William R. "Bill" Smith

William R. “Bill” Smith, 83, of Rt. 73, Shinnston and formerly of Ritter St., Bridgeport, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at United Hospital Center. He was born July 12, 1924, in Fink, WV, a son of the late Bert Smith and Betty Means Smith Walker and stepson of the late L. R. Walker.  

He is survived by his companion, Betty Hebb; one son, William R. Smith, II, of Philippi; five grandchildren, Mark A. Smith, II, of Bridgeport; Wendy Smith of Philippi; Hollie Smith of Clarksburg; Jennifer Smith and her husband Todd of Clarksburg; and Rob Smith of Philippi; six great-grandchildren, Amber Cross, Ashley Glover, Keeann Glover, Charley Glover, Emery Smith and Brandon Smith; and one sister, Vi Lebrum and her husband Ray of Hilton Head, SC.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine Smith, and a son, Mark Alan Smith.

Bill served in the US Navy during World War II. He formerly was a welder for Grafton Coal and Compton Auger and retired from UCAR after 25 years of service.

He was an avid sports fan who loved to golf, especially at Tygart Lake. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Bill was a member of the VFW Post 573, Order of Elks Lodge 482, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 52, all of Clarksburg, and American Legion Post 31 in Shinnston.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, where funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at the K of P Cemetery, Salem, where Military Funeral Honors will be accorded by the Lewis County Honor Guard.
