James Arliff Murphy

James Arliff Murphy, 73, of the Marshville Community, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born April 29, 1934 in Metz, WV, a son of the late Arliff  and Mamie Lemley Murphy.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Jean Miller Murphy, whom he married April 26, 1975.

Also surviving are three children, Kevin Murphy and his wife Shannon of Martinsburg, Melinda Woodyard of Marshville, James A. Murphy, Jr. and his wife Susan of Marshville; seven grandchildren, Justin and Brandon Murphy, Jesse Woodyard, Brittany and J.D. Roach, and Arliff and Mackenzie Murphy.

Also surviving are five siblings, Doris Coombs of Morgantown, Lloyd Murphy and his wife Dean of Fairmont, Helen Stark and her husband Harold of Mannington, Frank Murphy and his wife Dottie of Salem, and Maxine Randolph and her husband Bud of Salem; and several nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Francis Bates Murphy, one brother, Dale Murphy and one sister, Pauline Howard.

James was a graduate of Bristol High School Class of 1952. Following graduation he entered the US Marine Corps. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring in 1977 as a Gunnery Sergeant from Camp Lejeune, NC. While in the Marine Corps he worked as a recruiter in Allentown, PA, worked in motor transport, and ran the mess hall at Camp Lejeune.

He also retired from the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center after 20 years of service. He started in Ingredients Control and retired in 1996 as Head Cook.

James attended Wolf Summit Wesleyan Methodist Church and belonged to the VFW and the Marine Corps Association. He enjoyed camping, traveling and spending time with his family.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport  from 2-8 pm Tuesday, April 15, 2008. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday at the funeral home with Reverend Dan Cope presiding. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery, where Military Burial Honors will be accorded.
