John J. Calcerano
John J. Calcerano, 78, of Pleasantville, NJ, passed away in the company of the family he dedicated his life to on Tuesday, August 21, 2007. He was the son of the late John and Angelina Calcerano, and is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 57 years, Hylen. John spent his early years growing up in the Inlet Section of Atlantic City, moving to Pleasantville as a teen-ager, where he attended Pleasantville High School. He excelled on the football field, and earned a scholarship to Salem College in West Virginia where he met his lifelong mate, Hylen Burnside.
After graduating from Salem College in 1951, he proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. After his enlistment was up John moved to Pleasantville and became a teacher at the Junior High School and later at the High School. He was then named the Principal of Pleasantville Junior High School, where he earned a reputation as a firm but fair leader. John moved on to work with the NJ State Department of Education before retiring to spend time with his family.
John spent his retirement devoting himself to his wife, the family they raised with love, and his friends. He loved family gatherings, big or small, and enjoyed telling and hearing stories about the good times with those he cared about. Known for his quick wit and dry humor, he was always somebody you wanted to be close to.
John loved his walks on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, in any kind of weather. When asked where he liked to vacation he would reply that he lived his vacation, at home in Atlantic City. When he did travel, his favorite destination was to West Virginia to spend time with his wife’s family.
John was predeceased by his brother Victor.
Along with his wife Hylen, John is survived by his children Terri Coyle (John) of Egg Harbor Twp., John Calcerano (Carol) of New Gretna, and Jayne Reinhard (Philip) of Galloway; his grandchildren Jodi Beck (Brian), Andrea Nicholson (Roger), Nicholas Pomnitz, Sarah and Megan Howard; his great-grandchildren Gavin Calcerano, Erin Beck, and his honorary grand-daughter, Stephanie Dellorco, as well as his sisters Sarah Boney and Rose Wachter, his brother-in-law Arnett Burnside of Bridgeport, and sister-in-law Carol Lloyd (David) of Sun City, FL
