Iris Eileen Freeman Matheny
Iris Eileen Freeman Matheny, 84, of Jane Lew, passed away Sunday evening, November 11, 2007, at her residence. She was born December 2, 1922, in Abbott Mines, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Clyde McKinley and Mabel G. Freeman.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Garold Matheny, on December 6, 1991.
Surviving are three children, Janice Oldaker, Jane Lew; Sandra Gladwell, Toledo, OH; and Gary Matheny, Lancaster, OH; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Leah Jo Oler, Timonium, MD; and a brother, Jess Powell and his wife Patsy, Bridgeport.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, John Matheny; 2 sons-in-law, Kenneth “Jake” Oldaker and Tom Gladwell; a daughter-in-law, Pauline Matheny; and 2 sisters, Margaret Freeman and Mabel Imojean Dean.
Iris was employed by Hills Department Store for 9 years, beginning as a pin machine operator in the stock room, then as manager of the domestics department. She retired from JoAnn Fabrics as a manager with 14 years of service. She enjoyed needlework and crafting, and was Methodist.
Friends may call at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Wednesday from 2 – 8 p.m., where services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Pastor William Lanham officiating. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.
