Send Condolences to the Lloyd Family

Betty May Bodamer Lloyd

Betty May Bodamer Lloyd, 72, of Valley Drive, Bridgeport, passed away Thursday afternoon, September 13, 2007, at her home of 35 years.  She was born December 10, 1934, in Hobart, IN, the youngest of three daughters born to the late Carl Fredrick and Helen Bessy Hardesty Bodamer.

On December 22, 1956, she married Howard Thomas Lloyd at the Deep River Church of Christ and they resided in Gary, Indiana.  They moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1961, then to Bridgeport in 1966.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children, Michael Thomas Lloyd of Rockville, MD; and Susan Elaine Lloyd, currently stationed at the Osan Air Force Base in South Korea; and two sisters, Ruth Helen Cummings, Hobart, IN; and Grace Marie Goodaker, Knox, IN.  A niece, Donna Marie Stark and a great-nephew, William Stark, Jr., Michigan City, IN; and two nephews, Daniel Carlton Goodaker and Mark Walter Cummings, also of Indiana, complete her family.

Betty went to school in Ainsworth and Merrillville, IN, and started her work life with the Bear Brand Hosiery Company as a Secretary and worked there for many years before getting married, having a family, and moving to West Virginia.  Betty also worked for Monet Jewelry and National Retail Services, which allowed her to travel and work with people throughout the area—an occupation she loved.

As a very devoted mother she loved her children and worked with them all of her life, volunteering for numerous projects and activities in the community, as a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and Coach.  She served as Youth Director for the American Red Cross and a Homeroom Mother at every opportunity.  Her goal was to give every child a chance to excel, bring out their ability to lead, and show them they were loved every minute of the day.

She served on the Board of Directors for the Vandalia Girl Scout Council, Black Diamond Girl Scout Council and American Red Cross – where she completed her career with High Honors.  She was the area’s delegate at the National Girl Scout Convention in Dallas, Texas.

Betty did volunteer work for the American Cancer Society and was selected to be the Area Ambassador sent to Washington, DC and Charleston, WV, to lobby lawmakers to increase funding and resources dedicated to cancer research and cancer survivors.  She also personally raised money, participated in cancer survivor walks and other events to further demonstrate and support how much this issue meant to her.

She dedicated her own resources and time in the role of a missionary in Latin America, teaching teachers in those countries how to instruct children in their church classrooms as well as taught Sunday School at the Bridgeport Church of Christ for several years.  All this was driven by a passionate belief that bringing joy to others, and strengthening her Church was her duty to God.

Betty preferred that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to the Bridgeport Church of Christ, P.O. Box 624, Bridgeport, WV 26330

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Bridgeport Church of Christ, corner of Philadelphia and Center Streets, Bridgeport, on Saturday, September 22, 2007.  Visitation and fellowship will begin at 3:00 p.m., and the service will be held at 5:00 pm with John Board and Steve Stevens, ministers at the Church of Christ, presiding.  Visitation and fellowship also will follow the service, concluding at 8 p.m.  Everyone that knew her and would like to spend some time with her family and friends are welcome.

A Burnside Funeral Home service.
