William Carl "Trapper" Conner (1922-2007)

William Carl “Trapper” Conner, 84, of Pennsylvania Ave., Bridgeport, and formerly of Anmoore, passed away late Tuesday evening, July 17, 2007, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.  He was born in Spelter on July 23, 1922, the son of the late Emmett C. and Lucy Shingleton Conner. 

He is survived by his wife, Emily Hathaway Conner, whom he married October 10, 1947, at St. Paul Methodist Church, Anmoore. 

Also surviving are 7 children, Diantha “Dee” Hilton (Tom Hilton), Clarksburg; Rodney Conner, Manassas, VA; R. Kim Conner, MD, (Beverley Conner), Birmingham, AL; Stephanie Cross and  (Herb Kendall), Clarksburg; Tommy Conner (Jeanie Bolyard), Meadland Community; K. Scott Conner (Eva Conner), Bridgeport; and Eric D. Conner, Bridgeport; his grandchildren, J.T. Hilton and his fiancée Marla, Clarksburg; Amanda Hilton, Clarksburg; Shawn Conner and Katherine Conner, both of Birmingham, AL; Amy Cross, Clarksburg; Mike Cross, Mt. Clare; Morgan, Trent, and Trey Conner, all of Bridgeport and Courtney Bolyard and Nathan Bolyard, both of Meadland; and a great-granddaughter, Emma Cross.  Two sisters, Trellis McIntyre and Carol Conner, both of Spelter, and several nieces and nephews complete the family. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Palmer. 

Trapper graduated from Victory High School, Class of 1940.  He was a member of the Bridgeport United Methodist Church, and formerly of the Anmoore United Methodist Church.  He was a millwright for 29 years at M & H Zinc Plant, and also for 15 years at Union Carbide.  Starting as a police officer in Anmoore, he served as Police Chief for 10 years and also as Municipal Judge.  After retirement, he also worked for 15 years at the Meadowbrook Mall in landscape maintenance.   

Trapper could be seen at all Bridgeport High School football games. For over 22 years he managed the chains on the sidelines at all home games. He could been seen at any field in Harrison County watching grandkids play ball – whether it be baseball, basketball, or football. He was a coach for Clarksburg Moose Babe Ruth and Little League Baseball for over 35 years. Trapper was the first of only two coaches inducted into the Harrison County Babe Ruth League Hall of Fame. 

An avid golfer, he was a member of Sunnycroft Country Club for over 20 years, and formerly loved to bowl.  He was a former member of Anmoore Lions Club and Clarksburg Moose #52. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions in Trapper’s memory please be made to either the Bridgeport United Methodist Church, 251 Worthington Dr., Bridgeport, WV 26330 or to the Bridgeport High School Athletic Boosters, 515 Johnson Ave., Bridgeport, WV 26330.  

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport from 2:00 – 9:00 PM on Thursday, July 19, 2007. On Friday, Mr. Conner will lie in state from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the Bridgeport United Methodist Church, 251 Worthington Dr., Bridgeport, where the funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM with Reverend Steven E. Dorsey presiding. Interment will follow in the Bridgeport Cemetery.
