Venola Shahan Marteny (1919 - 2007)

Venola Shahan Marteny, 88, formerly of Bridgeport, passed away Tuesday evening, July 3, 2007 at Meadowview Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bridgeport. She was born April 30, 1919 in Belington, WV, a daughter of the late Floyd and Lummie Tenney Shahan. 

Her husband of 58 years, Neil Marteny, preceded her in death on September 22, 1995. 

Mrs. Marteny is survived by eight children including Shirley Jean Wheeler and her husband Kenneth of Akron, OH, Carol Sue Wheeler of Clarksburg, Brenda James and her husband Howard Garrison of Ft. Worth, TX, Roger Neil Marteny and his wife Sharon of Bridgeport, Linda Rose James of Callahan, FL, Randy Dean Marteny and his wife Barbara of Lost Creek, Nelson Keith Marteny and his wife Kathleen of Ft. Myers, FL and Terry Jo Johnson and her husband Randy of Clarksburg; 23 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ernest Shahan of Bridgeport and Sterling Shahan of Charleston, SC. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three children, Barbara Ann Marteny, Nancy Joyce Stout and Steven Dale Marteny; three sisters, Viola Shahan, Vilda Riffle and Ercie McCloy and one brother, Eugene Shahan.

Mrs. Marteny attended the Lost Creek Seventh Day Baptist Church and was a cook for several years for the church’s Camp Joy. She worked for several years on the Harrison County Election Board and dearly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions in Mrs. Marteny’s memory please be made to Camp Joy, C/O Lost Creek Seventh Day Baptist Church, PO Box 241, Lost Creek, WV 26385.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport from 2:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday, July 5, 2007. On Friday, Mrs. Marteny will be moved to the Lost Creek Seventh Day Baptist Church, where she will lie in repose from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM in the church with Reverend Perry L. Cain presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
