Mrs. Bernice Mae Compton Hovatter (1924-2007)

Mrs. Bernice Mae Compton Hovatter, 82, formerly of 603 Glen Ave., Bridgeport, passed away Saturday afternoon, June 16, 2007 at Richmond Place in Lexington, KY following an extended illness. She was born November 3, 1924 in Taylor County, WV, a daughter of the late Otha and Nora J. Kisner Compton.

She was preceded in death by her friend and former husband, Charles E. Hovatter, on August 2, 1999.

Mrs. Hovatter is survived by her three daughters, Terri Lusk and her husband David of Lexington, KY; Donna Bryant and her husband Tom of Littleton, CO; and Gina Moore and her husband Rich of Berwyn, PA; ten grandchildren including Charles Lusk, Matthew Lusk, Heidi Lusk, Nora-Ellen Lusk, Heather Bradley, Megan Wood, Justin Bryant, Sarah Moore, Cameron Moore, Nicholas Moore; two great-grandchildren, Madeline Lusk and Lilly Lusk; one brother, Otha “Junior” Compton and his wife Betty of Bridgeport and two sisters, Katherine Sinsel of Grafton and Doris Potter and her husband Raymond of Texas.

In addition to her parents and former husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur Veyon, William “Bill” Compton and Charles E. “Jim” Compton; as well as two sisters, Edith Summers and Lillie Moran.

Mrs. Hovatter was a homemaker, a wonderful cook, caregiver, gardener, golfer, huge sports fan – especially of the WVU Mountaineers, and a member of the Simpson Creek Baptist Church in Bridgeport.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport form 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Tuesday, June 19, 2007. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday in the funeral home with Dr. C. Michael Hopkins and Pastor Bob Scharnhorst presiding. Interment will follow in the Bridgeport Cemetery.
