Armin J. "Bud" Gill

“Our big, handsome, brave, courageous, good looking, hunter, fisherman, gardener, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend is now finally at peace.” 

Armin John “Bud” Gill, 84 of Stout St., Bridgeport, passed away Wednesday evening, March 21, 2007 at Clarksburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. He was born January 21, 1923 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, a son of the late Armin F. and Bertha Niemeyer Gill.

His wife of nearly 60 years, Betty R. Moore Gill, whom he married June 5, 1947, survives him.

Additionally, he is survived by three children Linda Coleman and her husband Barry of Miamisburg, OH, Donna Hartley and her husband Warren of Rivesville, WV and Armin J. “A.J” Gill, Jr. of Bridgeport; seven grandchildren Courtney Coleman Prang and her husband Jim of Zanesville, OH, Barry A. Coleman of Miamisburg, OH, Elizabeth Coleman Abbott and her husband Brandon of Kettering, OH, Rebecca Hartley and Melissa Hartley both of Rivesville, WV, A. Jacob Gill of Clarksburg, and Army Specialist Jonathan Gill and his wife Talena of Fort Bragg, NC; and two great-granddaughters, Riley Padar Prang of Zanesville, OH and Kira Gill of Fort Bragg, NC.

One brother and sister-in-law Robert N. Gill and his wife Mary of Harrisburg, PA, and one sister-in-law Jean Gill of Wilkes-Barre, PA as well as several nieces and nephews complete his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and brother-in-law, Bertha Jones and her husband Thomas, and one brother, John H. Gill.

Bud was a graduate of Coughlin High School and obtained his B.S. Degree from Wilkes University in Pennsylvania. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army Signal Intelligence Service from September of 1944 until August of 1946. At the completion of his service, he held the rank of Tech III and was awarded the Amy of Occupation Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He retired as a Branch Manager with Monroe Calculator Company / Litton Industries in 1983 after many years of dedicated service.

Mr. Gill was a very active and respected member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Clarksburg where he served on the Church Council for eight years. He held membership in the Mountaineer Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Bridgeport Boosters and the Beagle Club. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion Post 68. He was an advisor for eight years with Boy Scout Explorer Post 7, and served as a volunteer at the Louis A. Johnson V.A. Medical Center for 10 years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, golfing, gardening, fly fishing, hunting dogs and Bridgeport High School Sports.

Bud’s wishes for cremation have been honored by his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions in Bud’s memory please be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church Rt. 1 Box 210, Clarksburg, WV 26330.

Friends may gather with his family for a time of sharing memories at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Rt. 19 S., Clarksburg, (located near United Hospital Center) on Saturday, April 14, 2007 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. A celebration of his life will then be held in the church at 1:00 PM with Pastor James L. Caton, II presiding. Interment of his cremated remains will take place on Monday, April 16, 2007 in the West Virginia National Cemetery, Pruntytown, where Full Military Honors will be accorded.

The family of Armin John “Bud” Gill, Sr. has entrusted his arrangements to the care of Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport.
