Arlene L. “Nonnie” Chiero Riley, 81, of Broadway Ave., Bridgeport, departed this life’s journey and entered the Kingdom of Heaven early Monday morning, February 19, 2007, at her residence following a brief illness. Born February 6, 1926 in Anmoore, WV, she was a daughter of the late Dominic and Maria Buzzese Chiero Bell.
She was preceded in death on August 4, 2002, by her husband of 59 years, James L. Riley, Sr., whom she married on August 25, 1943. The couple was married twice, once quickly when Mrs. Riley’s husband departed for World War II, and then again four years later upon his return.
Arlene is survived by two daughters and one son, along with their spouses – Nancy Stalnaker and her husband David of Charleston, WV, Darlene Horne and her husband John of Bridgeport, and James L. Riley, Jr., and his wife Tammy of Bridgeport.
“Nonnie”, as she was affectionately called by many, was a loving grandmother to 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Valeri Stalnaker MacIntyre and her husband James; John Horne, II and his companion Cheryl Chrislip; Lisa Horne Golden and her companion Rockford Moore; Melissa Stalnaker King; Michael Horne and his wife Christy; David Stalnaker and his wife Carrie; James Riley, III; Heather Horne Holbert and her husband Joshua; Joseph Riley; Aaron Horne; and Joshua Riley and his wife A.J.. She had eight great-grandchildren, Kerrigan Golden, Kyleigh Golden, Kara King, Alexa King, James MacIntyre, V, Griffin MacIntyre, Connor MacIntyre and Olivia Stalnaker. She is also survived by one brother, Vincent “Jim” Chiero of Columbus, OH; two half-sisters, Lena and Sandy both of Clarksburg; one half-brother, John Chiero of California, several nieces and nephews, cousins and three step-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Riley was cared for in her final days by her loving caregivers Barbara Stuart, Janet Taylor, Amanda Webb and Phylis Andy.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Angelo “Stitch” Chiero, and one sister, Angelina Shonkweiler.
“Nonnie” was known by many who were recipients of her famous cookies, Easter bread, sweet rolls and pepperoni rolls. An avid quilt maker, she loved to bake and crochet. She was a lifetime master bridge player and also loved playing Bingo. She spent her later years in service to her family, caring for their needs and lavishing them with love.
She retired from CB&T Bank, where she served as Executive Secretary. She was a 1943 graduate of Bridgeport High School and continued her education at West Virginia Business College. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church where she was Past President of the Altar Society and the Homeroom Mothers’ Club of All Saints Catholic School.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, from 2:00 – 4:00 & 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 21, 2007, where a funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday morning with Reverend Thomas P. Horne presiding. Interment will follow in the Bridgeport Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Riley have been entrusted to the care of Burnside Funeral Home, Bridgeport.
