Hayward A. Robey

Hayward Ahva Robey, 85, of Broadway Ave., Bridgeport, passed away Friday evening, February 9, 2007 at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, Clarksburg. He was born November 2, 1921 in Sardis, WV, a son of the late Ahva James and Chloe Alberta Hooper Robey.

 

His wife of 60 years, Irma Jo Watkins Robey, whom he married June 14, 1946, survives him.

 

Additionally, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah “Debbie” Horne and her husband Don of Bridgeport; two grandsons, Adam Douglas Horne of Morgantown and Brian Scott Horne of Bridgeport; and one sister, Doris Shepherd of Marietta, OH.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers Paul, Robert, Ernest and Carl Robey, and two sisters, Ruth Cheuvront and Elma Roush.

 

Mr. Robey retired with 15 years of service from Eazor Trucking. A decorated World War II veteran, he served with the United States Army, Second Ranger Battalion and held the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and Bronze Star medals for his heroism and involvement in the D-Day invasion of Normandy Beach.

 

Hayward also owned Bridgeport Taxi Service, as well as service stations in Bridgeport and Nutter Fort. He worked in construction for a period of time, during the construction of the Wheeling tunnels.

 

He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting and gardening. He was a sports enthusiast and was a talented and accomplished football and basketball player during his youth. Many times, he could be found sitting by a fire and listening to country music, his favorite of any genre.

 

Hayward was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother who dearly loved the time he spent with his grandchildren.

 

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Monday, February 12, 2007. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday in the funeral home with Reverend Thomas P. Horne presiding. Interment will follow in the Bridgeport Cemetery, where Full Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside.
