William F. "Bill" Alvey

William F. “Bill” Alvey, RN, MS, CPUR, 67, of Bridgeport, died Saturday morning, January 6, 2007, in the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center following an extended illness.   He was born July 29, 1939, in Madison, Indiana, a son of the late William R. and Nellie Cash Alvey.

He is survived by his wife, Mafalda M. Scrivo Alvey, whom he married March 3, 1969.

Also surviving are two sisters, Ann Popp, Lawton, OK; and Elizabeth Cluster, Kalamazoo, MI; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Carroll, Darrell, and Raymond Alvey; and a sister, Doris Jester, who passed away in March 2007. 

Bill earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education from Florida International University, and spent most of his nursing career with the Veterans Administration. He transferred from W. Palm Beach, FL to the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center as a Utilization Review and Resource Nurse in 1999, and retired in 2001.

He had served in the US Air Force from 1957 – 1961, where he was a Dental Specialist.  He will be sadly missed by Amber, his favorite cat. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Melanoma Program on behalf of William Alvey, Hillman Cancer Research Pavilion, 5117 Centre Ave., Suite 1.32, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

Bill’s wishes to be cremated were honored. Family and friends will meet at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, at 10 am on Friday, April 6, for a procession to the WV National Cemetery, Pruntytown, where interment with Military Graveside Rites will be held at 11 am. A gathering for family and friends will follow at the Hampton Inn, Bridgeport.
