Send Condolences to the Nuzum Family

Walton Nuzum

Presley Walton Nuzum, 90, of Meadowbrook Road, Bridgeport, passed away Tuesday morning, November 21, 2006, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg, following a brief illness. He was born on June 2, 1916, in Bridgeport, a son of the late Justice F. and Lillie M.Martin Nuzum. 

 Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Jean Wagner Nuzum, whom he married January 11, 1947; two daughters, Lynda Trippett and her husband Jim; and Pam Piatt and her husband Gale; one son, Robert Nuzum and his wife Peggy; four grandchildren, Kristin Trippett, Tyler Trippett, Ashley Piatt and Shane Piatt, all of Bridgeport; one brother, Justice Nuzum and his wife Mary of Madison, Ohio; two sisters, Rosalie Mauller of Bridgeport and Willa Glaspell and her husband Howard of Fairmont, and several nieces and nephews.  

In addition to his parents, Mr.Nuzum was preceded in death by five infant siblings, one brother, Luther Nuzum; two sisters, Genevieve Clevenger and Geraldine Malcolm; and three brothers-in-law, Burl Mauller, Floyd Clevenger and Parker “Sam” Malcolm. 

Mr. Nuzum graduated from Bridgeport High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Field Artillery, 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal for heroic service in Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge. He worked at Bridgeport Country Club during its construction and then as groundskeeper for fourteen years, and also previously worked at Bishop Construction. Additionally, he farmed and raised cattle until his retirement at age 82. Mr. Nuzum was a member of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church all of his life, where he served as Sunday School superintendent and trustee. He was also a member of the V.F.W. and The Military Order of the Purple Heart in Harrison County. 

Mr. Nuzum loved his church, his country, his family, friends, and also his dogs and farm animals.  He enjoyed talking with people from all walks of life and spent much of his life helping others. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. 

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport (www.burnsidefuneralhome.com) from 1:00 - 8:00 PM on Friday, where the funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday with Pastor Samuel O. Cale, IV presiding. Interment will follow in the Smith Cemetery, Meadowbrook Road, where Military Funeral Honors will be accorded by members of the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard.
