Susan L. Post Carr

Send Condolences to the Carr Family

Susan L. Post Carr, 52, of Marshville, passed away Sunday morning, September 24, 2006, at her residence after a long battle with cancer. She was born December 22, 1953, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Clarksburg, a daughter of Elaine (Zillifro) Post, who survives in Clarksburg, and the late Orian Post.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, James E. Carr, whom she married May 22, 1976.

She has two children, James Franklin (born in 1977) of Marshville, and Sarah Elaine (born in 1978) of Boston, MA.  Additionally, she is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Burl “Butch” and Patty Post of Sycamore, and several nieces and nephews.

Susan attended South Harrison High School where she was first a Majorette and later a Feature Twirler with the marching band. While in high school, she also played the clarinet with the semi-professional Johnstown Concert Band, the oldest organized band in West Virginia. She appears on a recording they made in the late 1960’s.

Susan graduated from West Virginia University in 1975 with a degree in Art Education and a minor in Journalism. From 1975 to 1976 she worked as head designer at Harvey Glass Factory, where she created floral designs that were hand painted on the glass lamps. Lamps featuring her designs were sold nationally by JC Penney and other retailers. When Harvey Glass went out of business, a Canadian company purchased her designs, and some of her lamp designs are still in production.

She worked as a substitute teacher so that she could spend more time with her children while they were young. After her children both started school, she began teaching art full-time, first at Lumberport Middle School, then at Bridgeport High School, and later at Salem Junior High School. For the past fifteen years, she has been the art teacher at Bridgeport Middle School where she had the pleasure of teaching every 6th, 7th and 8th grade student in the school. She was exceedingly proud of her students who consistently did well in local and state art competitions.

Susan’s greatest joy in life came from spending time with her family, and from helping her students discover their own artistic talents. Her selfless devotion to her family and her school will be remembered forever by her husband, her children, and the thousands of students who passed through her classroom.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Tuesday, where a funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 pm Wednesday afternoon with Reverend Paul Holyfield presiding. Interment will follow in the Broad Run Cemetery, Jane Lew.
