Roxie Dale Givens

Send Condolences to the Givens Family

Miss Roxie Dale Givens, age 90, formerly of Lawman Ave., Bridgeport and most recently a resident of Woodhill Ave., Salem, went home to be with her Savior early Sunday morning, February 26, 2006 at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg. She was born in Elizabeth, Wirt County, WV on October 15, 1915, a daughter of the late Reverend O.J. Givens and the late Myrtle Morehead Givens.

She is survived by one sister Mrs. Mary Alice Cox and her husband Ernest with whom she made her home in Salem, as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, one sister Virginia Bernard and three brothers Thurman Givens, Raymond Givens and Elden Givens preceded her in death.

Dale was a proud graduate of Bristol High School’s Class of 1934.

Dale was a practical nurse who specialized in “new born” care. She cared for many babies in Bridgeport, Clarksburg and Fairmont.

In 1945, she went to Cincinnati, OH where she became the first nurse for the children of Mr. & Mrs. T.O. Wentworth. She lived with the Wentworth family for many years enjoying children and grandchildren. She traveled to numerous countries in Europe and most of our beautiful United States with them. She enjoyed 45 wonderful years with the Wentworths – the most rewarding and fulfilling was having the joy of introducing them and others souls to Jesus Christ. Then, in 1990, she returned to Bridgeport to care for her ill sister.

Of her adopted family, she is survived by Mrs. Shirley Wentworth of Littleton, CO, Mrs. Shirley Wichern and her husband Robert of Denver, CO, their daughters Heidi Wichern and Amy Eben and family of Denver, CO, Dr. and Mrs. Theodore Wentworth and their sons Todd Wentworth and his wife Elizabeth, and Scott Wentworth all of Grove City, PA.

While living in Bridgeport, Dale was a member of Evangel Baptist Church. After moving to Salem, she attended the Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport from 2:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday, February 28, 2006. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM Wednesday in the funeral home with Pastor Jon Hayes presiding. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Quiet Dell.

Dale’s family members wish to thank the staff of People’s Hospice for their kindness and excellent care during her illness.
