Roger Alan Bonnell, age 56 of Needham St., Clarksburg, passed away late Wednesday evening, November 29, 2006 at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg after an extended illness. He was born May 4, 1950 in West Union, WV, a son of the late William O. Bonnell and the late Vicie Greathouse Bonnell.
Roger is survived by his second wife, Pamela J. Romano Bonnell whom he married June 25, 1999; one son, Roger “Blue” Bonnell and his wife Mari of Pennsboro; three step-sons David Romano and Mathew Romano, both of Clarksburg and Scott Jacobs of West Union; six siblings including Shirley Coplin and her husband Glade of Weston, Cathy Smith of Texas, Patty Helmick and her husband John of Arizona, Lou Miele of Augusta, WV, Bill Bonnell and his wife Paulette of Oxford, WV and Mike Bonnell and his wife Dolcie of West Union; six step-grandchildren, one step great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Karen Smith Bonnell, in April of 1996 and one sister, Wilma Jean Bonnell Nicholson.
Roger was a graduate of Doddridge County High School, Class of 1968 and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam Conflict. He was employed as a truck driver for many years by Matlack Trucking Company and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clarksburg.
He was a long time member of the Clarksburg VFW Post 573, Benevolent and Protected Order of the Elks #482 and the National Rifle Association.
Roger was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time at his cabin and gun collecting. He also was a fan of Bluegrass music.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM Saturday, December 2, 2006 and from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Sunday, December 3, 2006. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 PM Sunday evening in the funeral home to conclude the visitation. Catholic Burial Rites will be accorded at 10:00 AM Monday in the funeral home with Reverend Charles E. McGinnis, Jr. presiding, assisted by Reverend Etheldean Yanero. Interment will follow in the West Virginia National Cemetery, Pruntytown, where full military honors will be accorded at the graveside.
