Richard Edward Gebhart, age 90, of the Maplewood community, Bridgeport, WV and formerly of Toledo, OH, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 10, 2006 at The Heritage in Bridgeport. He was born October 4, 1916 in Toledo, OH, a son of the late Edward Gebhart and the late Pauline Grimme Gebhart.
His wife of nearly 55 years, Janet Wallace Paterson Gebhart, survives him. The couple was married November 30, 1951.
Additionally, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Susan Hendee Markwood and Dr. Stephen E. Markwood of Philippi, WV; two grandchildren, Kathryn Ochampaugh and her husband Kevin of Garden City, Kansas and Christopher Markwood of Herndon, VA; four great-grandchldren, Kyle, Jonathon, Jacob and Ryan Ochampaugh; and one sister, Virginia Broadway of Toledo, OH. Nieces and nephews including Carol Ann Moore and her husband Kenneth of Toledo, OH, Roger Broadway of Albuquerque, NM and Larry St. Aubin of Toledo, OH complete the family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Marvelle Baker.
Richard graduated from DeVilbus High School and retired as a meat cutter after 33 years of service with the A&P Tea Company in Toledo, OH. After his retirement, he worked nine additional years in the same capacity with Kelly’s IGA in Maumee, OH.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Maumee, OH where he served as a deacon. He was a veteran of World War II, having served 3 ½ years with the United States Army and obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Richard was a federated baseball player in Toledo, OH and coached Little League Baseball in Waterville, OH. He also enjoyed bowling and anything to do with woodworking.
At the request of the family, floral gifts will not be accepted. However, contributions in Mr. Gebhart’s memory may be made to either the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 200 E. Broadway, Maumee, OH 43537 or to Alderson-Broaddus College, Renewing the Promise Campaign Scholarship Fund, PO Box 2154, Philippi, WV 26416.
There will be no funeral home visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date to be announced at the First Presbyterian Church in Maumee, OH. Inurnment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Waterville, OH.
