John W. Long, age 83, formerly of Benedum Run Rd., Bridgeport, passed away Sunday evening, January 15, 2006 at the residence of his daughter near Jane Lew, WV. John had been ill since May of 2003 and his family took care of him until his death.
He was born the fifth out of six children on March 31, 1922 in Clarksburg, WV, a son of the late William Ford Long and the late Cora Belle Epler Long.
In 1947, he married his former wife, Charlotte Turner Long, who survives him in Clarksburg. They had three children Gwendolyn Kohut and her husband Bill of Morgantown, Vallerie Snow of Jane Lew and William Paul Long of Colfax. He was blessed with six grandchildren including Jeff and Brian Kesling, Jonathan Snow, Mallory, Nathan and Spencer Long; and four great-grandchildren Carrie Falls, Chase Sampson, and Johnny Raye and Olivia Kesling. He is also survived by one sister, Ruby Smith and her husband Wendell of Columbus, OH.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings.
John graduated from Roosevelt Wilson High School, Class of 1939 where he played football and attended Fairmont State University. He attended the Hammond Methodist Church until the 1960’s and then transferred to the Bridgeport United Methodist Church where he remained a loyal, faithful and very supportive member until his death.
For more than 30 years, John was employed as an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. After he retired from Metropolitan, he worked for Hunter Bennett of Weston for 16 years. He was also employed by the National Carbon before he enlisted in the military. He was a proud veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the Army Air Force from 1942 – 1946 and was stationed in Europe. For his service, he attained the rank of Corporal and received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theatre Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
He enjoyed building projects and working on his farm. He loved talking about the time he spent in the military. He also liked playing outdoor games.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home 607 S. Virginia Ave. on Thursday evening, January 19, 2006 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. On Friday afternoon, Mr. Long will lie in state from 12:00 Noon – 1:00 PM at the Bridgeport United Methodist Church 251 Worthington Dr., Bridgeport. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM Friday at the church with Reverend Steven E. Dorsey presiding. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Quiet Dell, where full military honors will be accorded by Clarksburg V.F.W. Post 573, Salem V.F.W. Post 9151 and members of the honor guard unit from Camp Dawson, Kingwood, WV.
