Clarence Raymond Cunningham, age 86, formerly of Deerfield Dr., Bridgeport, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 18, 2006 at the Peachtree Christian Hospice Center in Duluth, GA following an extended illness. He was born November 19, 1919 in Birchfield, WV, a son of the late Donley Cunningham and the late Ruba Pearl Kiger Cunningham.

 

Twice married, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Elta Cunningham on January 5, 1994 and by his second wife, Pauline Swisher Cunningham on August 21, 2004.

 

Mr. Cunningham is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Richard L.”Dick” Cunningham and his wife Penny of Alpharetta, GA; two grandchildren Timothy R. Cunningham and his wife Jill and Robert A. Cunningham, all of Georgia; and his precious great-granddaughter Amelia Elizabeth Cunningham. Three nephews and a niece conclude his family.

 

In addition to his parents and spouses, he was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

 

Ray was retired as a Sales Representative from General Foods Co. after 31 years of service. A Veteran of the United States Navy, he served during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. He was a longtime member of the Bridgeport Church of Christ where he served as an elder. He was an avid golfer and in his earlier days, he enjoyed working on his family’s farm and hunting.

 

Ray was a kind and thoughtful man who anyone knew they could count on in their times of need. He was a loving husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa who will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

 

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Cunningham’s memory may be made to either the American Cancer Society, West Virginia Division, 2428 Kanawha Blvd. East, Charleston, WV 25311 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter, 1111 Lee St. East, Charleston, WV 25301.

 

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Thursday, July 20, 2006. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday in the funeral home with Evangelist John Board presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside by members of the West Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard.
