Carmella Moccia Schnautz, age 90 of Rt. 4 Bridgeport, Victory Valley Community, passed away late Monday evening, July 3, 2006 at her residence following an extended illness. She was born December 1, 1915 in Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Reverend Alexander Moccia and the late Rose Vallo Moccia.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. John Otto Schnautz on May 17, 1992. The couple was united in marriage on October 30, 1959.

She is survived by five children including Charles Alexander Murphy and his wife Mary Sue of Cleveland, OH; William Schnautz and his wife Faith, Dorothy Stapleton and her husband Jim and Charles Schnautz and his wife Susan all of Roseburg, OR, and Mary Carter of London, England; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters Pauline Nespeca of Cleveland, OH and Dorothy Gaudi of Jeanette, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers John Carroll Moccia and Reverend Virgil Philip Moccia, and a daughter-in-law Linda Schnautz.

Carmella worked from 1939 to 1947 as the Home Management Supervisor in Wetzel, Marion and Monongalia Counties for the FHA (Farmers Home Administration). She then became State Home Management Supervisor out of the Morgantown headquarters until this part of the program was phased out. After leaving her job in 1954 she joined the staff of Potomac State College for three years teaching Home Economics. In October 1954 she went to Bolivia to work as a Home Economist for the USAID (part of the State Department) where she trained and supervised 25 home agents. She moved on to Lima, Peru where she met her future husband, John O. Schnautz who was serving as a vet for USAID. They also lived and worked in Bangkok, Thailand and Kaduna, Nigeria. She then returned to the FHA in June 1970. In all, she traveled to 38 countries before retiring to her 200-acre farm and home near Rosemont, WV.

She was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church of Our Saviour in Clarksburg, a church that her father founded. She enjoyed cooking and wrote cookbooks. She was a member of the Pioneer Women’s Club, the Presbyterian Women’s Society, and was a Moderator of Presbytery who was very involved in the statewide Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions in Carmella’s memory be made to the Presbyterian Church of Our Saviour, 611 E. Pike St., Clarksburg, WV 26301.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Friday, July 7, 2006. On Saturday, Mrs. Schnautz will be moved to lie in state in the Presbyterian Church of Our Saviour at 611 E. Pike St., Clarksburg from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday in the church with Reverend Robert Horstman presiding. Interment will follow in the Elkview Masonic Cemetery.
